Abstract

This article examines the history of the Institut für Literatur 'Johannes R. Becher' in the context of state measures to train young writers in the GDR. The article raises the question whether this and related strategies to promote new literary talent may have had consequences counter to those planned by the SED regime. In addition, the changing function of the Institut is placed in the context of shifts in cultural policy from the 1950s to the 1980s.
