Abstract

This book is concerned with how film constructs space, the spatial codes and strategies that it uses, the relationship between space and time in film, and the role of spatial constructs in enabling us to understand new concepts of identity, exile and displacement. The essays, which re-evaluate and extend recent theoretical debate in relation to the regional and national cinemas of Europe, are accompanied by original contributions by two practising European film directors. The book examines smaller and less well-explored cinemas as well as those of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia and Spain.
