Abstract
Objective. To compare the performance of a Single Vessel Processor (SVP) in mixing a model drug-excipient powder system with that of conventional techniques. Conclusions. The inability of TT mixing to produce homogeneous blends was considered to be due to a lack of internal shear forces, particularly between initial fine particle agglomerates of sodium chloride, provided by this mixing method. In the cases of GM mixing and mixing in the novel SVP, sufficient shear forces were provided to break up such agglomerates, by the grinding action of the mortar and pestle and from the high pressure air conditions supplied to the powders in the respective techniques. It was concluded that a novel SVP was capable of producing blending conditions equivalent to or better than those currently possible using conventional mixing techniques
