Abstract
Articular cartilage is a complex composite material in engineering terms. It is inhomogeneous, anisotropic and demonstrates a time-dependent nonlinear relationship between stress and strain. This paper reviews the application of the finite-element method to the loading of articular cartilage, and highlights the potential of this numerical technique in the investigation of osteoarthritis
