Abstract
Mechanical keying has not been considered as a significant mechanism in the adhesion of polymers to metals. Evidence is presented that mechanical keying is an important mechanism in the adhesion of polyethylene to anodised aluminium surfaces, suggesting that such a mechanism should be considered whenever adhesion where a porous oxide might be present on a substrate surface.
