Distributed generation offers the potential to deliver power close to the point of use and to maintain consumer's supplies during network disturbances which result in the loss of the grid connection. As always these opportunities create a series of challenges, for which Smart grids, their component systems and innovation offer solutions. The first challenge highlighted in this paper is to maintain or maximise the active power output of the distributed generation while observing the network's voltage constraints during normal operation. The second challenge is managing the transition from grid connected to islanded operation following a network disturbance. Although this is not permitted under current UK regulations, there are no fundamental reasons which can not be overcome. Finally, there is the challenge of rebuilding the network and restoring the grid connection, facilitating 'normal' operation following a disturbance. Identifying and understanding the challenges, together with a proper appreciation of the facilities offered by smart grids leads to new techniques which can aid the full exploitation distributed generation.
