Abstract

It is proposed that the lyrics of the German rock musician Udo Lindenberg can be used as teaching material in German as a second language curricula in UK high schools. Lindenberg's place in German popular culture is discussed, the politically charged topics and themes he deals with in his songs are characterized, and bibliographic and discographic information is provided for locating his lyrics. Suggestions are offered for how to use Lindenberg's texts in the second-language classroom. It is stressed that such material can invigorate German instruction and familiarize students with some of the cultural and social issues in Germany today.
