A simplified four degree-of-freedom nonlinear Rayleigh-Ritz formulation for the buckling and postbuckling of partially delaminated struts is presented. Bifurcation analysis indicates that in general instability occurs at an asymmetric point of bifurcation. After bifurcation, realistic solutions are found to follow the stable post-buckling path, the unstable branch being denied by contact between the contributing laminates. Depending on the geometry and position of the delamination, either thoroughly stable (thin film) or unstable (general) buckling follows in the post-buckling range. Asymptotic post buckling results are obtained with the help of the algebraic manipulation code Maple, and are compared with predictions from finite element ABAQUS runs.
