Abstract
The author provides a reflection and ‘long vision’ on the term ‘precariousness’ by means of the microhistory of the members of her high school class in Southern Italy in the late 1970s. She traces their life and career paths inside and outside the peninsula, finding that they were strongly conditioned by geographical origin, social class, and gender. A comparison of statitical data of youth intellectual un/employment by gender, geography and age bands relating to the late 1970s with data relating to today show that Southern youth and particularly women continue to be the most disadvantaged groups.
