Abstract
This paper presents a solution for the automation of powder processing for tablet production within the pharmaceutical industry. The aim of the proposed solution is to achieve flexible processing and lights-out production, a major aim of many pharmaceutical companies. A single-vessel prototype is introduced which eliminates the need for the conventional eight distinct unit operations. Validation of the vessel is achieved by examining each of the sub operations within the processing cycle for qualify of product and efficiency of operation. Initial testing has been undertaken for the sub-processes of size reduction and mixing. The results from these indicate a saving of 50% in processing time. It is anticipated that this vessel will aid int he overall automation of pharmaceutical and food production, providing a facility which enables flexible productionof powder processing
