Abstract

The principal elements necessary for assessment of the noise generating potential of a hydraulic circuit are presented. It is proposed that the estimation of noise at the design stage requires mathematical models of the fluid-borne noise source, its coupling to the circuit spatial layout, the resulting structural oscillations, and the conversion of mechanical energy into airborne noise. Appropriate models and tools for the above aspects are reviewed. Some preliminary work has been undertaken in the simulation of wave coupling in simple 2-D and 3-D liquid-filled pipe systems. Results are found to agree well with previously published measurements. The paper concludes with proposals for an expert system which incorporates the individual models of the noise generating process. Such a system would aid designers in configuring quiet hydraulic circuits
