Current commercial framework in China does not offer a level-play field for independent smart energy grids to thrive and compete with the central supply for supplying domestic energy customers. This is largely because that the energy price from the central supply is highly subsidised to ensure social stability. This poses a major barrier for efficient and integrated independent energy systems to provide flexible energy sharing to end consumers. Integrating energy systems and energy demand from electrical, heat and transport can substantially improve the efficiency of micro-energy systems through building better demand profiles to suit local generation and infrastructure. However, the true cost of such an efficient supply cannot compete with the central supply where the price is kept artificially low. In order to realise energy internet, and putting micro-energy grids in the same level play field with the central supply, this paper recommends a number of market developments and reforms to create the right economic environment and make the system work for the benefit of energy consumers.
